While client is king, it is sad that most clients believe that for whatever reason, it is okay to lie to a salesperson. The lies range from simple ones like "I will be back," to serious ones like "It is way cheaper elsewhere." Most of these lies are meant to intimidate the salesperson to sell at way lower than the market price, even at a loss. It is therefore important for the salesperson to have the cues that a client must be lying to them. Here are nine signals;

We are still looking around

This infamous line usually comes towards the close of the deal. By the time a client says this, they have really struggled to end the conversation without hurting your feelings. To decode this, it means they weren't impressed by the product. If you feel misunderstood, or that you could have done a better job explaining, it is time you turn over the sale to someone else, who may have a better personality fit with the client. At the end of the day, you want to close the deal.

It's Cheaper Elsewhere

Do not let a client set prices for you. You understand your business, and how to run it, and of course how you price it better than a client.

Most of the times, clients blackmail salesmen with the prospects of buying the same product elsewhere at even half the price you are selling it. Whether it's a brand new car or a second-hand car on sale, do not let the client intimidate you. By the time a client walks into a dealership, they have already done their research both physically and also checked for online cars on sale. Chances are, they like your product that's why they are in your space.

I'll ask my husband

Another infamous line at the close of a deal that stops any salesperson in their tracks. If the decision was to be finally made by another authority, chances are very high that would have come up at the beginning of the conversation. What the client wants the salesperson to believe is that the final decision rests with someone else, what they actually mean is that they do not trust what the dealer has told them.

The best way to handle this is to "invite" your colleague to pick from where you left, as you cannot impose trust on someone who already has an opinion about you.

I'm Just Looking

While it's possible for a client to just look, they are out to get information while looking. It is important to back off when a client days this. What it means is that you are smothering them, and they need space. It can be annoying when you are trying to move around, and someone is breathing on your neck asking you every 30 seconds if they can help you. Just back off.

I'll check your website

By the time a client comes to your dealership, they have most likely checked your website. If they are there physically and are suggesting checking your website. or even pamphlet, they just want out for various reasons. After all, you are there physically and can answer the questions, considering that you wrote the information on the website.

Ask them if they need clarification on anything. Do not smother them though, as you will look desperate.

If you can't give us a huge discount the deal is off

Don't panic. As long as you have told them the selling price, do not let a customer intimidate you. Chances are, they will not buy it with such a huge discount they are asking for, as they will know that you were just about to rip them off. Standing your ground is a way better option.

Watch out for unnatural body language

Some clients do not lie every other day, hence there will be give- away signs in their mannerisms. For instance, they could start talking very fast, as a sign of nervousness. Some may avoid eye contact. or even start fidgeting. They may even decide to look away altogether. If they start acting weird, it is possible that Pinocchio took a better part of them.

Send me some information I'll look at it

This is a very subtle way of saying get lost without hurting your feelings. They probably don't think the deal is worth it and want out. Whatever information they need is right in front of them, you. Why leave and read the information elsewhere? Depending on how badly you want to make the sale, ask them what their areas of priority are to keep the conversation going.

Your competition is cheaper.

Well, what are they doing here then?

Conclusion

Clients are human, and it is possible for them to speak some untruths mostly to get a better deal, intimidate the salesperson or to walk out without hurting the salesperson's feelings. Whatever the case, it is important that as a salesperson you are armed with information on both the brand-new cars and the second-hand cars on sale, to appeal your case.
